World famous wynton Marsalis & jlco will perform today at santa cruz civic auditorium
Valencia Barnes purchased two tickets to see Wynton Marsalis & JLCO perform tonight, as a birthday present for her husband, Jon Barnes. The city of Santa Cruz asked Jon Barnes, who has studies Wynton’s music for over 30 years, to write a proclamation to honor Wynton and his amazing orchestra. Jon says, “it is with great respect that I am able to participate in giving back to our heros, who have worked so hard in creating new opportunities for musicians, playing and promoting Jazz music in education all around the world! Wynton inspired me to teach, write, compose, record, and score my own big band music to share with my students and continue the tradition of our culture, which can be found on itunes. Music education is key in developing life long learners!”
Founded by trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has been going strong for 25 years. The original line-up consisted of Wynton’s septet and former members of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, and now features fifteen of the best all-around musicians in jazz today. Marsalis, the first jazz composer to receive a Pulitzer Prize (for Blood on the Fields), conceived the idea of preserving and advancing America’s art form through the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra’s performances. For this concert, the JLCO celebrates the music of three respected composers whose innovative works have stood the test of time: Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, and Chick Corea.
